The most common design used in posters for the play All in the Timing is a clock. That’s why we decided to go in a different direction for this show. Working with the Director, Lee Papa, we came up with the concept of using falling objects to illustrate the concept of timing. I developed these two incarnations, and was prepared to take the concept further (using any number of different silhouettes, objects, and environments) if needed. However, for the budget of the play, two posters was sufficient, and no more elaboration on the concept was needed.

This series of booklets was produced for the Children’s Institute, a non-profit organization to benefit underprivileged children and their families. Each booklet addresses a different issue that affects low-income communities in Rio de Janeiro, such as health, the environment, family planning, and what it means to be a citizen.

The target audience for the booklets is primarily people who are not regular readers, and whose visual references are limited. In the inside pages I used several universally recognizable visual elements to facilitate and encourage non-linear, or skim reading, such as speech bubbles, boxes and tables. For the covers, I selected an iconic and easily identifiable image for each topic, and combined it with the Institute’s rich color palette to build a different and unique color combination for each cover, while still maintaining a consistent design aesthetic across all the booklets.

Linha Mestra’s website is a great example of form and function combining for a great site. The site is for a company that makes educational materials, and has many corporate clients. So, the website needed to maintain a certain corporate feel, both for the identity of the company, and to make the user feel comfortable that this is a serious company in its field. But, education isn’t about being corporate, it’s bright and vibrant and fun. That’s why I chose a vibrant palette and used a more informal style over most of the page, combining corporate feel with colorful fun.
